Blue Cheese Dirty Martini Recipe
If you haven't had a dirty martini before, what are you waiting for? While a classic martini, made with gin and dry vermouth, is delightful, sometimes you need to switch it up a bit. There is nothing like ordering a fancy cocktail in a nice restaurant or bar, but it can be intimidating, since there is a hidden science to ordering a cocktail.
Lucky for you, you don't even need to leave your home to enjoy this elegant libation. Recipe developer, Christina Musgrave, brings us this recipe for a blue cheese dirty martini. So what makes a martini dirty anyway? A dirty martini contains olive juice, as well as gin, and a splash of dry vermouth. This particular recipe also contains blue cheese-stuffed olives as a garnish. Musgrave notes "The olive juice offers a salty, tangy flavor to the martini that makes the drink savory, and breaks up the gin."
Gather your ingredients for this blue cheese dirty martini
To make this blue cheese-stuffed dirty martini, you can start by gathering your ingredients. For this recipe, you will need blue cheese-stuffed olives, dry vermouth, gin, and olive brine. Musgrave tells us "Mezzetta [is] my favorite brand of olives!" Any style of gin will do, but a London dry gin, such as Bombay Sapphire or Tanqueray, is preferred for this recipe.
Assemble the olive garnish
Start by assembling your garnish. In a blue cheese dirty martini, you will need, you guessed it, blue cheese-stuffed olives. Using a cocktail skewer or toothpick, poke 3 olives through, and set aside. You will come back to this once the cocktail has been made.
Swirl the dry vermouth in a glass
Next, add dry vermouth to the cocktail glass that you will be serving the martini in. Give the glass a swirl, coating the inside of the glass, and then discard the vermouth. Musgrave notes that this step is crucial. She says "This is a classic method of making a martini. Swirling the vermouth imparts the flavor in the glass. That way, it doesn't dilute the drink at all, but adds the right flavor."
Shake, and serve the dirty martini
In a cocktail shaker, add the gin, olive brine, and plenty of ice. If you want your martini filthy, add extra olive brine. Shake the cocktail well, until the shaker is chilled to the touch. Then, remove the top, and strain the drink into the prepared cocktail glass. Lastly, top the cocktail with the blue cheese olive garnish, and serve immediately.
- 3 blue cheese-stuffed olives
- 1 ounce vermouth
- 2 ½ ounces gin
- ½ ounce olive brine
- Slide the olives through a cocktail skewer, and set aside.
- Pour the vermouth in a cocktail glass, swirl, and discard the vermouth.
- Combine the gin, olive brine, and ice in a large shaker. Shake well, until the shaker is chilled.
- Strain into the prepared cocktail glass, and serve with the blue cheese-stuffed olive garnish.
